Underground Fire Hydrant With Antifrost Valve
This ductile iron GGG40 underground fire hydrant self-drains through a brass antifrost valve, preventing freeze damage in cold climates. Available in 930mm and 610mm heights, with stainless steel AISI 304 stem and N.B.R seals. DN65 (Type A) and DN100 (Type B) outlet nozzles accept water meters, pressure-reducing valves, and flow limiters without on-site machining.

Products Description
Underground Fire Hydrant with Antifrost Valve
A ductile iron underground hydrant built to sit below the frost line and drain itself dry after every use, so the barrel never holds water that could freeze and crack the casting.

GGG40 ductile iron body grade

Overview
This underground fire hydrant is cast from ductile iron GGG40 to EN 1563, the same grade used across the flanged sleeve, head, extension and valve. It's designed to be buried with only the handwheel and cover exposed, keeping the working parts protected from traffic, weather and tampering.
The stem runs on stainless steel AISI 304 and is sealed with N.B.R rubber and O-rings, so the moving parts stand up to years of underground exposure and repeated opening and closing without the barrel drying out or seizing.
Two overall heights are available - 930 mm and 610 mm - to match different burial depths and pipe layouts, and both share the same internal valve, seat and antifrost assembly.
Self-draining antifrost valve
The brass antifrost valve opens as soon as the main valve closes, letting residual water drain out of the barrel so nothing is left standing to freeze in cold ground.
Below-ground protection
The ductile iron flanged sleeve and antifrost extension keep the stem and valve seat sealed off from soil and groundwater once installed.
Serviceable by design
The control rod stop, cover and handweel come apart for maintenance without disturbing the buried flanged sleeve or the pipe connection.
Two Height Variants
STANDARD
930 mm overall height
H = 930 mm
The taller variant for deeper burial or sites where the handwheel needs to sit well clear of finished ground level. Shares the same valve and outlet configuration as the 610 mm version.
COMPACT
610 mm overall height
H = 610 mm
A shorter-body variant for shallower installations, shown here fitted with the optional small air valve (item 18) alongside the standard antifrost valve.

Where It's Installed
Municipal street mains
Buried along city and township water mains, with only the operating cover at grade for fire brigade access.
Industrial & logistics sites
Fixed hydrant points around plants, warehouses and tank farms where a low-profile, traffic-clear fitting is required.
Cold-climate networks
Regions with sustained sub-zero ground temperatures, where the self-draining antifrost valve prevents freeze damage between uses.
Frequently asked questions
Q: How does the antifrost valve keep the hydrant from freezing?
A: The brass antifrost valve (item 17) sits below the main valve and opens automatically as soon as the handwheel is closed. It lets the water left in the barrel drain out into the surrounding gravel bed instead of sitting in the pipe, so there's nothing left to expand and crack the casting if the ground freezes.
Q: What's the difference between the 930 mm and 610 mm versions, and which one do I need?
A: Both share the same valve, seat and antifrost assembly - the only difference is overall length. Choose 930 mm for deeper bury depths or where the handwheel needs more clearance above grade, and 610 mm for shallower installations. Your pipe depth and local frost-line requirement will usually decide it.
Q: What's the difference between the Type A (DN65) and Type B (DN100) outlet nozzles?
A: Type A is a DN65 outlet and Type B is a DN100 outlet - the larger DN100 size passes more flow, which matters where a single outlet needs to supply higher-demand equipment. Both nozzles share the same internal layout (venturi, piston, spring and cylinder) and accept the same range of attachments.
Q: Can I fit a water meter, pressure-reducing valve or flow limiter without machining anything on site?
A: Yes. Each outlet nozzle bolts onto the hydrant body through a rubber O-ring, and the flow limiter, pressure-reducing valve, water meter or symmetric half-coupling with cap are designed to mount on that same outlet. No regulation, drilling or handling is needed at installation.
Q: What materials make this hydrant suitable for long-term underground burial?
A: The flanged sleeve, antifrost extension, head and valve are ductile iron GGG 40 to EN 1563, which resists the loading and corrosion of underground service. The stem is stainless steel AISI 304, all seals are N.B.R, and the wear-prone valve seat and nuts are brass - the same combination used across both height variants.
