Indoor fire hydrants, also known as standpipes, must be strategically installed throughout a building to provide effective firefighting access during emergencies. Their placement is carefully regulated by local fire codes and standards, ensuring that water is always within reach when a fire occurs.
Typically, fire hydrant cabinets are installed along corridors, stairwells, and near exits so that both occupants and professional firefighters can reach them quickly. High-rise buildings require hydrants on every floor, ensuring that water is available even on the upper levels where fire hoses from the ground may not reach.
Hydrants are also commonly positioned near high-risk areas, such as electrical rooms, mechanical rooms, kitchens, and storage areas, where fires are more likely to start. In industrial or warehouse settings, hydrants may be spaced to cover large open areas and aisles, providing maximum reach and flexibility.
The distance between hydrants depends on building size and local regulations, but most codes require that a hydrant be reachable within 30 to 60 meters (100–200 feet) from any point in a protected area. Proper placement ensures that water is available immediately, allowing effective fire suppression while minimizing property damage and risk to occupants.
