Resilient Gate Valve

The resilient gate valve is a reliable shut-off component for low-to-medium pressure fluid systems. Its core advantage lies in the rubber-encapsulated gate, which delivers bubble-tight sealing even with minor pipeline irregularities.
Featuring an epoxy-coated ductile iron body for corrosion resistance, it operates with minimal torque and offers full-bore flow to reduce pressure loss.
Suitable for municipal water, wastewater, and light industrial use, it’s low-maintenance, cost-effective, and excels at preventing leakage in non-aggressive fluid applications.

Resilient gate valves use rubber-encapsulated gates (typically EPDM or NBR) for sealing. Most models are rated for ≤80°C (176°F); some specialized EPDM versions may handle up to 120–130°C (248–266°F), but this is near the rubber's thermal limit.

At higher temperatures, the rubber seal can age, harden, or deform, losing its sealing ability and shortening the valve's lifespan. For applications above 130°C (e.g., steam, high-temp industrial fluids), metal-seated gate valves (rated up to 400°C+) are the appropriate alternative.

What Are the Main Limitations of Resilient Gate Valves to Consider?

Temperature Restrictions Due to Rubber Seal Vulnerability

Resilient gate valves rely on rubber-encapsulated gates for sealing, which limits their temperature range. Most standard models tolerate a maximum of 80°C (176°F), with specialized EPDM versions only extending to 120–130°C (248–266°F). Exceeding this causes rubber to harden, deform, or degrade, losing sealing capability and shortening lifespan. They are unsuitable for high-temperature applications like steam systems, industrial processes with hot fluids, or environments with extreme thermal fluctuations.

Incompatibility with Aggressive or High-Viscosity Fluids

Incompatibility with Aggressive or High-Viscosity Fluids

These valves perform poorly with aggressive chemicals (e.g., concentrated acids, solvents) and high-viscosity fluids (e.g., heavy oils, sludges). Corrosive substances attack the rubber seal and epoxy coating, leading to leaks and structural damage. High-viscosity fluids adhere to the gate and internal components, causing blockages, increased operating torque, and difficulty in opening/closing. For such applications, lined valves or metal-seated alternatives are more reliable.

02

Unsuitability for Frequent Throttling or Modulating Flow

Resilient gate valves are designed for on/off shut-off, not frequent throttling (partial opening). Partial flow creates uneven pressure distribution, eroding the rubber seal and causing vibration. Over time, this leads to premature seal failure, leakage, and reduced valve efficiency. They lack the precision needed for flow modulation in process control systems. For applications requiring adjustable flow rates, globe valves or butterfly valves are better suited.

03

Size Constraints and Higher Costs for Large-Diameter Models

Resilient gate valves face practical limitations with large diameters (typically above 300mm/12 inches). Larger models require thicker rubber seals and sturdier structures, increasing weight and installation complexity. Manual operation becomes impractical due to high torque demands, necessitating expensive gear or electric actuators. Additionally, large-diameter versions have higher manufacturing and maintenance costs compared to compact alternatives like butterfly valves, making them less cost-effective for large-scale piping systems.
