What Types Of Firefighting Foam Liquids Are There?

Foam is an essential component in fire fighting. Foam is used to extinguish fire by smothering it and preventing access to oxygen necessary for the fire to burn. There are various types of foam, each with its unique properties and characteristics that make it suitable for specific fire types. This article will discuss the primary types of fire-fighting foam available.

1. Class A foam:

Class A foam is used for wood, paper, fabric, and other organic materials. This type of foam tends to penetrate Class A materials quickly, allowing water to reach deeper-seated fires effectively. It also improves the wetting and saturation of Class A materials by lowering the surface tension of water, allowing it to penetrate better. Class A foam can also be used in wildland fires, as it provides extended wetting and fire retardation properties. Class A foam is generally used in a 0.1 to 1% solution.

2. Class B foam:

Class B foam is used for fires involving flammable and volatile liquids, such as gasoline, diesel fuel, crude oil, and various alcohols. This foam forms a stable blanket on top of the liquid surface, preventing evaporation and subsequent ignition. Class B foam can also be used as a vapor-suppressant, preventing the fire or explosion from propagating. It is commonly used in a 3% to 6% solution.

3. Class D foam:

Class D foam is used for fires involving metals, such as magnesium, titanium, and sodium. It forms a crust over the metal and prevents oxygen from reaching the burning metal. This foam also cools down the metal and prevents the fire from spreading. Class D foam is generally used in a 1% to 3% solution.

Conclusion:

Fire-fighting foam is an essential component in fire fighting. There are various types of foam available, each with specific properties and characteristics that make it suitable for specific fire types. Class A foam is used for organic materials like paper and wood, Class B foam is used for flammable liquids, and Class D foam is used for metals. Proper selection of the foam type is essential to ensure the fire is extinguished efficiently and effectively.
